School-wide Reading Support (K-8)

School-wide Reading Support is a decision-making framework that guides selection, integration and implementation of the best evidence-based academic practices for improving reading outcomes for all students. School-wide Reading Support is not a curriculum, intervention or practice, but instead is a collaboration between district and school staff in designing reading support systems at each tier of an RtI2 system.

District-wide Reading Support

  • Evidence-based approach for establishing rigorous and robust systems of response in a district that involves systemic support of sites implementing school-wide Academic Intervention Supports

  • The framework includes several evidence-based features:
    • Equity of access and opportunity for every student is a goal of the district
    • District RtI2 Leadership Team
    • Allocation of monetary and human resources
    • On-going professional development
"Of the many solution strategies that have been employed nationwide, the RTI2 model hopes to create in California’s schools and districts the conditions necessary for closing the achievement gap.”

- California Department of Education: Philosophy and Definition - RTI2

School-wide Reading Support

  • Evidence-based approach for establishing rigorous and robust systems of response in schools that involves systemic and individualized academic support strategies for achieving learning outcomes while preventing failure in all students.

  • The framework includes many evidence-based features:
    • Prevention focus
    • Collaboration of general education and special education staff, including reallocation of time and assignment
    • Universal and strategic interventions are provided in the general education classroom setting
    • Continuum of intensive, individual interventions
    • On-going collection and use of data for decision making
    • Administrative leadership — team-based implementation

Training is provided over a three-year period and includes professional development sessions, design and planning time, and on-site technical assistance. To participate, schools and districts must commit site and district teams and identify literacy coaches. Site teams and site/district literacy coaches must attend all SW Reading Support trainings. Literacy coaches must attend all district leadership and coaches trainings.
